The Girls on the Bus, Starring Melissa Benoist, Gets Max Release Update
BY VLADA GELMAN
JANUARY 22, 2024
The Girls on the Bus finally have a departure time.
The long-gestating series will premiere on Max this March, TVLine has learned. (A precise release date has not yet been set.)
The comedic drama is inspired by a chapter in Amy Chozick’s 2018 novel Chasing Hillary, which was based on the author’s time covering Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign as a political reporter.
In The Girls on the Bus, Supergirl vet Benoist plays Sadie McCarthy, “a journalist who romanticizes the original ‘Boys on the Bus’ and who scrapped her whole life for her own shot at covering a presidential campaign for the paper of record. Sadie hits the trail and eventually bonds with three female competitors,” per the official logline. “Despite their differences, these women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House.”
Joining Benoist on the Max series are Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher), Natasha Behnam (Mayans M.C.) and Christina Elmore (Insecure). The series-regular cast also includes Brandon Scott (13 Reasons Why, Dead to Me).
Additionally, Scott Foley (Scandal), Tala Ashe (Legends of Tomorrow) and Griffin Dunne (This Is Us) will all recur. Foley plays a little-known mayor from Kansas who has joined the presidential race, while Ashe portrays an offbeat-yet-accessible progressive who is one of the reporters’ clear favorites on the campaign trail.
The series was developed by Chozick and Julie Plec, both of whom will executive-produce alongside showrunner Rina Mimoun, as well as Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti Productions.
The Girls on the Bus has taken a rather meandering route to the screen: It was first ordered by Netflix in 2019, before being picked up by The CW after it failed to move forward at the streamer. The show then landed at another streamer when Max (then known as HBO Max) handed it a straight-to-series order in February 2022, five months after the project moved from Netflix to The CW.

I would’ve watched more of The Girls on The Bus. At least it didn’t end on a cliffhanger. While the fans seem to have liked it the critics were mixed. The critics liked the performances and the relationships between the characters but had problems with the writing, they didn’t like how journalism was portrayed which IMO is a challenge. I also think some of the marketing could have been better, critics shouldn’t have been expecting a depiction of hard core journalism. In this current environment if a show isn’t a hit with critics and fans it doesn’t get renewed.
It can also be a challenge translating a book to film. According to this article Julie Plec told Amy Chozick that Sadie has to have sex with someone.

‘The Girls On The Bus’ Canceled By Max After One Season
By Nellie Andreeva
Max has opted not to proceed with a second season of drama The Girls On The Bus. The decision comes two weeks after the Season 1 finale of the series, starring and produced by Melissa Benoist, was released.
“While Max will not be moving forward with a second season of The Girls on the Bus, we are grateful to have partnered with immensely talented Amy Chozick, Julie Plec, Rina Mimoun, as well as the teams at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television,” the streamer said in a statement. “We are so proud of this powerful story of found family and the celebration of journalism, in all its forms. We thank them and our unrivaled cast for all their incredible work and collaboration.”
The cancellation news is not entirely surprising. The adaptation of Chozick’s best-selling book Chasing Hillary had a relatively quiet run and didn’t break into Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings through it appeared multiple times on Max’s in-app Top 10 list.
Created by Plec and Chozick, The Girls On The Bus‘ first season centers on Sadie McCarthy (Benoist), a journalist who romanticizes a bygone era of campaign reporting and scraps her whole life for a shot at covering a presidential candidate for a paper of record. Sadie joins the bus and eventually bonds with three female competitors, Grace (Carla Gugino), Lola (Natasha Behnam), and Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore).
Despite the title, future installments were not expected to be confined to a campaign bus. Season 1, which ended with a cliffhanger, followed the primaries. Season 2 would’ve moved to the general election with the reporters getting off the bus and onto a plane, showrunner Rina Mimoun confirmed to TVLine.
The cast of the series also included Brandon Scott, Griffin Dunne, Mark Consuelos, and Scott Foley.
Chozick, Plec and Rina Mimoun executive produced with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Marcos Siega; Jesse Peretz executive produced and directed the pilot of the series, Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
The Girls On the Bus landed at Max after originally getting a series order at Netflix and then moving to the CW for development.

The Girls on the Bus Cancelled at Max — Get Scoop on What Would Have Happened in Season 2

The Girls on the Bus‘ journey has come to the end of the road: Max has cancelled the Melissa Benoist-fronted comedic drama after just one season, TVLine has learned.
Chozick and Julie Plec served as executive producers alongside showrunner Rina Mimoun, and Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter (for Berlanti Productions).

Sadie hits the trail and eventually bonds with three female competitors,” per the official logline. “Despite their differences, these women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House.”
Joining Benoist on the campaign trail were Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher) as veteran journalist Grace; Natasha Behnam (Mayans M.C.) as social media influencer/activist Lola; and Christina Elmore (Insecure) as conservative network reporter Kimberlyn. The series-regular cast also included Brandon Scott (13 Reasons Why, Dead to Me) as Sadie’s love interest/political staffer Malcolm.
In the season finale, which dropped on May 9, Sadie and her reporter pals discovered damning information about presidential hopeful Hayden Wells Garrett, aka Hot White Guy (played by Scott Foley), but that didn’t stop him from officially being named the Democratic candidate.
Elsewhere in the episode, Malcolm made a big, romantic speech to Sadie; Lola was offered a job at the Wall Street Journal after breaking a major donor scandal; Grace realized her daughter had a knack for investigative reporting; and Kimmy got fired from Liberty News Direct after she called out her employer on air, leading her to start her own media company.
In a post mortem Q&A, Mimoun revealed that Season 2 would have followed the general election, during which the girls get off the bus and onto a plane.
“We finally meet the incumbent Republican, so that would be a piece of the story,” Mimoun shared. “The girls are, essentially, trying to dig up the dirt on Hot White Guy and find out all of his deep, dark secrets.”
“One of the things that I was very excited about was we would be adding Grace’s daughter to the bus,” Mimoun continued. “We’d finally have [Malcolm] and Sadie trying to maintain some sort of a relationship now that he’s out of the business and it’s no longer a conflict of interest.”
Plus, Season 2 would have found Kimberlyn potentially starting a family while also trying to launch her own company. As for Lola, she would be “not hating every part of this corporate world that she has been attacking in Season 1 and trying to wrestle with that in her own way,” Mimoun said. (Get even more Season 2 scoop.)

I found the bit where in a fantasy Sadie jumped over the counter and beat up the guy at the mailbox store who didn’t want to give her the pills. Melissa’s channeling when Kara beat up Non after he put the black mercy on her. According to this article Melissa did the stunt herself.

“Melissa, being Supergirl, did that stunt when she jumps over the counter and punches the **** out of the guy [who wouldn’t give her the pills],” Chozick recalled about a fun fantasy sequence in the episode. “She [said], ‘I’m ready, I got it.’ And the whole crew was like, “Oh, my god, girl just lunged over the counter!'”

On this week’s The Girls on the Bus, Melissa Benoist‘s Sadie was dealt a big blow when her editor Bruce (played by Griffin Dunne) unexpectedly died. But Bruce was more than just Sadie’s boss. He was also a mentor and friend to her, and Benoist conveyed that in the depth of Sadie’s grief. The actress was brimming with anger and shock and sadness over the loss while talking to an imaginary version of journalist Hunter S. Thompson, proclaiming through sobs, “He protected me, looked out for me, unlike you.” When Sadie could no longer contain her tears, she sent “Thompson” away and broke down on a park bench. Through Benoist’s emotional performance, we could feel the magnitude of Sadie’s heartache in that challenging moment. — Vlada Gelman

Highlights of the interview...Mel's son saying things like Jumping Jehosaphat. Methinks someone in that house loves classic cartoons as some characters said that, perhaps classic TV as well. One of the characters on an old show Car 54 Where Are You from the early 60's said that. Wonder how she'd react if her kid uttered "Great Scott?" (first used by Superman on the radio voiced by Bud Collyer and not Christopher Lloyd in "Back to the Future"
And the something about a haunted chocolate factory. OK MELISSA MARIE BENOIST WOOD, YOU HAVE VENTURED INTO HIGH LEVEL WEIRD.
Then again, she likes ghost stories and UFOs (Holy George Noory and Art Bell!!)

Still enjoying this series very much. In a fantasy sequence Melissa got to use her kicking and punching skills. I’ve also seen her wear the gold stud earrings that she always wore as Kara that must be hers because she wore them on Glee too.
Here’s an interview with Melissa and EP Rina Mimoun about the main and IMO very well done storyline of episode 8.
