I've noticed that my mood has improved greatly after watching the successful premier of Stargirl the other night. It was like a vaccine for the fans of super hero shows who have been deprived of fun entertainment with plenty of action. I take my second dose this coming Tuesday night at 8:00 on the CW.

Taking a (well deserved) jab at Batwoman.

And, Starman, is played by Joel McHale, who, and yes here comes my game show freak-out, hosted the reboot of Card Sharks.

If this video is any indication, we could be in for a fun spring and summer!

By the way, I will say it, TV has a new cutest superheroine...and it's Stargirl.

Love this review: "The show takes it’s time to unfold, with key players slowly being introduced and hinted at. The first few episodes do an excellent job weaving the web of connection between each and every hero, villain, and eventual sidekick. This lays the groundwork to foreshadow the epic battle that will soon take place to save Blue Valley and America as a whole. DC has quite the winner here, as Stargirl leans into the aesthetic and feel of the era that these heroes were made famous in. From the vintage cars to the old-fashioned manners of its characters, Stargirl has us reliving the golden age of comic books through a modern lens. If the first few episodes are any indication of how the whole series will play out, then DC fans have quite the treat ahead of them."

And also very reminiscent of the original teenage Supergirl of the Silver Age Action Comics.

One thing that is different about Stargirl, at least in the comics, is that quite a few people, including both her teen friends and a few of the villains, know her "not-so-secret identity". But I suppose that's realistic, too. You wouldn't exactly expect a 15-year-old to keep such a thing secret for very long, would you? (In the comics, Courtney told her friend Mary about her Cosmic Staff-assisted heroics even before she made the decision to become a regular costumed superhero!)

I'll say one thing...this has some promise...provided it doesn't take the overused cliche trope of women being better than men which has tended to take Supergirl down a few notches.

That said...Rotten Tomatoes has rated Stargirl as 100% based on critics reviews.

One of those critics, TV Line's Matt Mitovich said in his "B-" review...

DC’s Stargirl is pure, contagious joy, as Courtney gets acquainted with her inanimate-yet-animated staff and all the tricks she can do with it. (Cue jaunty montage set to poppy music!) In fact, time and again when watching DC’s Stargirl — especially the first couple of episodes, out of the five I screened — it very much evoked the Walt Disney films of “old,” namely the ones in which college student Kurt Russell was accidentally bestowed with one power (invisibility) or another (supersmarts), and rightly geeked out. (Kids, ask your parents about Now You See Him, Now You Don’t.) The costume sewing process, almost always overlooked in such an origin story, here is played to great comedic, and logically sound, effect.

That is quite the comparison to say "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" Don't ask me how I know...I just know (Heh!)

But after the first episode sugar high..

Things drag a bit in the second episode as Stargirl deals with the repercussions of accidentally blowing up a bully’s car (whoops!) and then faces off with her first supervillain. But the series gets a second wind at the very end of Episode 3, because after all there is no “I” in Justice Society of America. (OK, there are three, but you get my point. A team must be assembled!)

Furthermore

They say a hero is only as good as his villain, and at first blush Stargirl’s adversaries are painted with the exact same brush — super-serious, stone-faced men. All sinister, no style. So in that respect, ISA get-togethers more resemble the Seven of Amazon’s The Boys. Also, Brainwave (Christopher James Baker channeling Willy Wonka‘s phony Slugworth), Icicle (Neil Jackson) et al are pretty damn ruthless, which is only an issue in that it clashes with the lighthearted tone of Stargirl’s own arc. (It’s also discomfiting to see grown men whale on/rough up a teenage girl. Fortunately, we eventually sense that some ISA members may be passing along legacies of their own.)

That being said...

DC’s Stargirl gets off to a rousing, high-flying start, then loses some momentum when subsequent episodes open with deep-diving, Titans-style, -centric flashbacks. But by Episode 4, the stage is set for what is both DC Universe’s and The CW’s lightest, brightest, family-friendliest live-action superhero show yet.

We'll see come May.
