Is Supergirl's Secret Identity a secret?

That's very possible and might be what throws a wrench into Alex's efforts to keep it silenced. My point with the original comment was in reference to the YouTuber's belief that the investigation story doesn't have anywhere to go.

With the story that the writers have told so far this season regarding Alex's placement into the Director's position, it appears that they're focusing on her ability to be a strong, capable leader. This means more than just making the right decisions. It also entails being able to pull the team together, have the same goal and same plan to achieve that goal. So far, she's struggled in that area, i.e., the examples you mentioned. I have to wonder if this investigation will continue to explore that concept. Does she have the leadership skills to build the team's confidence in her? Can she influence her team to keep the secret? Is she able to locate any possible dissenters and deal with them appropriately? These are all questions that could possibly drive both her story and at the same time drive Kara's.

In fairness, when they have focused on character, I think they have produced the best writing on the CW.

On his point about the DEO knowing Supergirl's identity, I think that that is actually an idea that does have room to be explored. Just because the DEO knows, and I don't think that the writers have explicitly indicated that they do not know, doesn't mean that they are bound to say anything. And I don't mean this because of some non-committal disclosure piece that they signed. There are many times, especially in a military or law enforcement setting, that the members of a tightly knit group of officers, detectives, etc., have an informal agreement not to reveal details that they believe might compromise members or the group itself. It's considered an essential part of a "brotherhood" that is established to keep each other safe by watching their backs. The DEO would be a similar type of environment.
So, I think that it is very possible that this investigation by Haley will be a test of that commitment. This not only seems like a reasonable direction given this situation but, when we also remember that the whole story is somewhat of an analogy for the secrecy within government that is being played on in society today, then it ties in with that, too.

I kind of want her to find out just so I have this very question answered!

It's pretty common knowledge that the EPs and writers are not the best about continuity and plot holes or even just covering their butts by being a little more diligent in the details that are put into episodes. Haley's entire presence is one that has been questionable since Alex was first required to salute her. However, I believe that part of the problem is that there has been a revolving door of writers, directors, EPs and even networks on the show and it's probably a struggle to keep all the pieces straight.

This is a good question, as the whole issue has been handled very casually up until now. You all make some good points and it will be interesting to see where they go with this. Or maybe as his last act as Director, J'onn wiped the memories of everyone at the DEO! LOL.

The part that I do agree with him on is the idea of being able to identify Kryptonian signatures. If Haley knows about that, then the importance of conducting an investigation is a mute point. Or, if there is actual video of Kara in the DEO then that, too, would make the case for continued concealment weak.

The point is valid. They spent 3 season not bothering with the secret identity thing at the DEO. Now it's an issue.

Alex is in charge, but she answers to Haley, who is somehow her "superior officer," a meaningless designation, because there has been no mention of Alex ever holding a military rank.
